Adherence Among Older Adults with COPD & Depression

Respir Med; ePub 2017 Jun 3; Albrecht, et al

Adherence to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) maintenance medications among older adults with both COPD and depression is low, with only 1 in 5 patients achieving adherence levels of 80% or better, a recent study found. The retrospective cohort study used a 2006-2012 5% random sample of Medicare beneficiaries co-diagnosed with COPD and depression who had ≥2 prescription fills of both COPD maintenance medications and antidepressants. Researchers found:

  • Of the 16,075 individuals meeting inclusion criteria, 21% achieved adherence of ≥80% to COPD maintenance medications and 55% achieved adherence ≥80% to antidepressants.
  • Higher levels of adherence to COPD maintenance medications were associated with decreased risk of emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations compared to no use.
  • Similarly, higher levels of adherence to antidepressants resulted in decreased risk of ED visits and hospitalizations compared to no use.
