While overall hospitalization rates for invasive aspergillosis (IA) in the US increased during 2000-2013, mucormycosis-related rates doubled during the same period, a recent study found. This according to an estimate of IA-related hospitalizations (IA-RH), mucormycosis-RH (M-RH), hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT)-RH, hematologic malignancy (HM)-RH, and solid organ transplant (SOT)-RH during 2000-2013. Researchers found:
- There were an estimated 169,110 IA-RH and 9,966 M-RH during the study period.
- IA-RH and M-RH rates (per million) rose from 32.8 to 46.0 and 1.7 to 3.4, respectively.
- There was a significant decline in IA-RH rate.
- Among HM-RH, rate of M-RH increased, but the IA-RH rate did not change significantly.
- M-RH and IA-RH rates both increased among SOT-RH.
