Despite advances in rheumatologic therapeutics over the past decade, older tests continue to be used for diagnostic purposes. Most rheumatic laboratory tests initially were described over 50 years ago and are based on the detection of autoantibodies. Although autoantibodies are associated with rheumatic diseases, their pathogenetic role remains unclear.
