Cochrane on Delaying Diabetes in People with IGT

Cochrane; 2017 Dec 5; Hemmingsen, et al

Diet plus physical activity reduces or delays type 2 diabetes incidence in people with impaired glucose tolerance, according to a Cochrane review of 12 randomized controlled trials involving >5,000 individuals. Among the specific findings:

  • In 11 studies comparing diet plus physical activity with standard or no treatment, fewer patients receiving the intervention developed diabetes (15% vs 26% overall).
  • In 2 studies comparing physical activity with standard treatment, fewer physical activity patients developed type 2 diabetes (41% and 68%, and 12% and 18%, respectively).
  • In 1 study comparing diet only with physical activity only, a similar portion of patients developed diabetes (44% and 41%, respectively).
  • Diet, physical activity, or both had neither a positive nor negative impact on heart attacks or strokes.
