The majority of adults who presented with a myocardial infarction (MI) at a young age would not have met current guideline-based treatment thresholds for statin therapy prior to their MI, a recent study found. The YOUNG-MI registry is a retrospective cohort study from 2 large academic centers which included patients who experienced an MI at age ≤50 years. Researchers found:
- Of 1,685 patients who met inclusion criteria, 210 (12.5%) were on statin therapy prior to MI and were excluded.
- Among the remaining 1,475 individuals (mean age 45 years, 20% women, 57% had STEMI), the majority (n=1,068; 72%) had an ASCVD score <7.5%.
- Only 724 (49%) and 430 (29%) met criteria for statin eligibility per the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines and 2016 US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations, respectively.
